Trip to the
beach. Dwaine arose before me this
morning to leave for San Salvador first. He was leaving at 6:15, so he got up at
5. I followed at 5:30. I had planned to have a day with Kelly,
Nicole and Kiki, going to Sonsonate and then on to the beach. I really had wanted to spend some more time
with her, so we planned this trip. Our
goal was to leave at 9, so I had a little bit of time to cook some breads and
wash some clothes. At 9, she walked over
and I was ready. Kiki has an English class
in Sonsonate every week day, so he had already left. We were to pick him for the leg onto the
beach. Kelly’s husband, Hose, also was
joining us. Overall, I think he was
concerned for our safety and directions to get to the beach. It was really nice of him to come along, for
we have studied with the whole family.
He has been suffering from insomnia, so he was really tired. First we went to the material shop in
Sonsonate. Since Kelly is a seamstress,
most all of the workers knew her. We
looked around and they helped me settle on material for a skirt. I really just wanted to know where the store
was located, but two things….one, I will never remember all the turns and two, I
will never have time to sew. Well, ‘never’
in an absolute. One day I will fit it
in. As far as the directions are
concerned, since I can’t remember where it is, we will have to go again someday. Hose went on to look around for a few things
and we said we would meet at the mall.
When we got there, we did not see him, so we went in to Selectos to pick
up some sandwich fixings for the beach.
Nicole must be about 8 and she helped me find everything! She is so precious. As we were ready to load, we saw Hose. We loaded up to go to pick up Kiki from
English class. His uncle teaches English
at the school, so he was letting Kiki take the class without any charge, just
two bus fare going and coming every day.
Next, the road was a straight shot to the beach. Since it was summer vacation, I thought the
beach would be really crowded, but it was not.
Kelly said that during the weekend it would be crowded, but all the
parents would be working during the week.
The area where we stopped was about 45 minutes from Sonsonate and was a
smaller beach with lots of rock formations in the water. They rocks were mostly dark and the beach
area was darker than the white beaches in most places. So, this had been a lava flow a long time
ago. First, we ate some sandwiches and
then Kelly, Nicole, Kiki and I spent the next three hours on the beach. Everyone was very guarded about going more
than waist high with the waves because they were so strong. Most of the time we were in the water, but
sometimes we just sat on the beach. That
gave me some time to talk with Kelly. I
was so thankful for this open door. She
shared that they were working on having a civil marriage ceremony, but she
needed some papers from lzalco. That
will be an easy trip to help her with, so we will plan this very soon. I am prayerful that she will go ahead and
make a decision and then she will be a strong example for Hose to follow, and
of course, her children too. She had
offered to help with our next breakfast event and I was so excited to see her
want to be involved. While we are going
to buy the food, there will still be some set-up time. She is planning to come early and help. Hose
stayed at the table in the pavilion all day and visited with people as he was
too tired to join us on the beach. We
decided to head out about 3:30. She said
they usually came to the beach about once a year and had to take several buses
to get there. I was excited to get to
share this time with her and hopefully we can do it again. I’m not real big on the beach, but it was a
very nice day to get away and share some time with this family. On our drive back, we got caught in road
construction, so it took about an hour and a half to go to Sonsonate. Then, we really hit the Friday rush hour. There was one wreck we came upon and that
took a while to get around. On the final
road home between Sonsonate and Juayua, it looked like they had really had a
big storm to come through. I kept
hearing moans and sighs and Kelly and Hose finally fessed up that they had a
lot of laundry outside that must be drowned now. Then, I realized I did too. It was so funny. We got back about 15 to 5, just in time to
get unloaded and cleaned up from the beach activities before Dwaine returned at
5:15. He had lots to share about his day
in San Salvador too. We got in some
great Skype time and called it a night about 11. I finished with the design of the
certificates for English class and Dwaine worked on his lesson for the series
he will teach after the marriage class. (Dwaine- Cesar has been going to San Salvador once
each month for years to help with the radio program. His father-in-law also is one of the speakers
so maybe he got Cesar started. Anyway he
has often gone alone and sometimes takes the bus but this was the last
recording of the year and they always have a special program where all the
speakers who have helped throughout the year come at one time and he wanted me
to go to meet everyone. We did leave
early and still got caught in a lot of traffic as we got into San Salvador and
thought we would be late. However we
were on time. We actually had to wait
for a little while because the recording booth was being used. There were about 10 different brothers who
came and all but one of them crowded into the small recording booth to do a
kind of end of the year group recording of best wishes for the new year. I sat outside and visited with the one
brother who did not go in. They invited
me to speak but I did not feel my Spanish was ready for radio. After the recording we all went into a large
room with a big table and sat and visited and had cake. I did enjoy getting to meet all the brothers,
most for the first time. Then we had to
drive about another hour to the home of Eliza’s parents to pick her and Abby up
for the trip back to Juayua. We stopped
for lunch at Wendy’s and then went by Walmart and on the way back also went by
Metro Centro in Sonsonate. It was a
pretty long day with lots of riding.
