The longest day. Charlotte
was up early cooking a casserole to take to Ana's as well as bread loaves for
Ana and for our breakfast here tomorrow and poppy seed chicken to take to Socorro. We headed out about 8:30 and stopped in the
market to buy some flowers to take to Ana's.
While we were in the market we ran into this guy we have seen many times
that we call Elvis. He lived in
California for a while many years ago and speaks some English. He seems very odd and one person even told us
they though he might be dangerous though he seems harmless enough. I had seen him a couple of weeks ago and he
told me he had been taking medication daily for many years for schizophrenia. This morning he called me his father. We joked about it (Kelly had joked Friday
that we were her parents because we were helping her with their wedding.) Charlotte was kidding me about being his dad
and I said well you can guess what that makes you. After we got the flowers we dropped the
chicken off at Socorro’s and she was really excited about it. She is going to try to attend the breakfast
tomorrow. Then we went over to Ana's and
left the food and flowers and visited about 30 minutes. Then we had to run back home because Kelly
had said they might go and we always give Suleyma a ride on Sundays and we were
also supposed to pick up Wendy and Oscar.
Kelly said they could not go this morning and when we went by their road
only Wendy was waiting. After service we
ran back home for lunch then headed back out at 1:30 to go to Ana's for the
funeral. There were quite a lot of
people there when we arrived. A group of
4 guitar players arrived and sang and played a few songs as they stood around
the casket. There was a preacher from
Dora's church who spoke and prayed some.
When he prayed all the guitar players also prayed very loudly and it was
really strange to hear them all praying at once. Soon a pickup truck arrived and the casket
was placed in the back of it. Then some
men carried Ana out and put her in our car.
Her mother and one of her daughters also rode with us. Our car and Cesar's and the pickup were the
only vehicles, everyone else walked from the house completely across town to
the cemetery. When we got there Cesar
parked outside but I was directed on in all the way to the grave site because
of Ana's condition. We got her out and
she sat on a concrete bench. There was a
large crowd and a lot of loud crying (especially Ana). As the casket was finally lowered into the
grave one daughter who was probably about 13 started screaming over and over “I
want my mother” and she finally passed out.
Someone called a taxi and it came and picked her up and some of her
family. After we took Ana back home several
people arrived so we did not stay too long.
We went by Regina and Pedro's house to meet with them and Cesar and
Eliza about moving the church. They said
that was a decision that we would have to make and that they were happy to
offer their home but would be happy to attend if we moved to the new
place. As we were wrapping up Bessie and
Isabella arrived from Ataco. They had
gone to our house to visit us and then came on to Regina's when we were not at
home. They rode back to our house and
stayed about an hour. While they were
visiting we got another knock on our door and a lady who had told Charlotte
after the last event that she was willing to study with her stopped by with her
9 year old daughter to make sure about the time of the breakfast in the
morning. Charlotte talked with her about
possibly studying Thursday (Christmas eve) and she said that should be
fine. They stayed about 40 minutes and
after they left we finally had a late dinner and Charlotte got to work on her
presentation for the lady's breakfast in the morning. She had said she had waited because she had
thought she would have all afternoon and evening to work on it but did not even
get to start until 8 pm.
