Pupusas! Yeah, I can cook pupusas now! I guess you have to visit El Salvador to
appreciate this. As you know, many
ladies have be a great help to us here.
Today, Bessy, her mother Marta, and her mother-in-law, Isabela, came at
9:00 to help me learn how to cook pupusas.
First we went to the market to get a few ingredients. Then, came the chopping. I have never seen three ladies work so efficiently. I tried to keep up writing down directions,
but it was hard to keep up. We decided
on four kinds, azote, chicken with cheese, sausage with frijoles and cheese,
and the untraditional bacon and cheese.
(Although we have heard rumors that bacon and cheese pupusas have made
an appearance in El Salvador.) Then, we
also make the cabbage and carrot topping.
This is almost like slaw, but it is not sweet at all. Finally, we made the cooked tomato and onion
salsa from scratch. Yummy! Marta was cooking lunch for the coffee
workers, so we were trying to finish about 11 to 11:30. We only had my griddle to work with, but it
did the trick. I would mention that they
usually buy a huge bag of corn, soak it and cook it. That takes about three days. Then, they take it to the mill and grind it
to make the dough. For me, since I want
to be able to cook them in the States, I just used corn flour. I am sure that was a little quicker. Anyway, Marta and Bessy had to leave out
early, but we stayed on and cooked until the dough was all gone. Then, we had a feast of pupusas. Wow, they were great! The only foreboding I had was the fact that
when I try them from scratch, I will only have one of me instead of four. I am indebting to these ladies for their
help. After lunch we rested a little bit
and then at 4, Ricardo and Joli came over with Linda. Ricardo and Joli proposed a plan for teaching
women throughout El Salvador. It is
called Deborah’s Ministry. Within the
overall program there will be projects that will be conducted and the first
will be Project Priscilla. Joli will be
implementing the program, starting this week and will be visiting Santa
Telca. She asked Linda and me to help in
the program. It sounded exciting, but
like a lot of work. Since our Saturday’s
are full, she said that we could aim for a week day on some of the
gatherings. We are in prayer about this;
I had mentioned this idea to Dwaine one time and this was the theme of my ladies’
class last year when our group came. We
will try to have them over again soon to get more details. Afterwards, we went to Zoila's for Bible
study. There was a good turnout and
Carlos led a great lesson.
